Japanese rock gardens, often called "Zen Gardens," were influenced mainly by Zen Buddhism and can be found at Zen temples of meditation. Each is a unique, living work of art, ever changing, never the same and never finished. Surely there is a metaphor for the universe and life cycles among other things.

When fritz1 and I undertook the making of this mix, it was in the spirit of designing a rock garden. It is our second mix together, though the first to yet be posted. Like the karesansui  this mix goes through many cycles before resolving with an unusual folk tune by Tim Buckley followed by a group of musicians from Inner Mongolia playing a traditional Chinese song. The mix is intended to be heard in one sitting and thus is available as one long file for download.

The rock gardens can be extremely abstract and may represent mind-scapes as well. We like to think of this mix in similar terms.

For the quiz, name the musician related to jazz/pop star Norah Jones. A free copy of the mix, tracked and with artwork awaits the winner.

Without looking it up, I'll say it's Anouska Shankar.

Freakin' cool mix, btw.

Wonderful. I love the Charlie Byrd (love that tune), Ellen Allien and Blonde Redhead. Excellent theme too. You two are obviously a good mixing match!

Listened to this the other night.  Magnificent mixing.  Very cool.  Will listen again, and probably some more.  Cheers.
