Every Kind of Music But Country (country box set, pt. 1 of 5)

As hinted at a little while ago (though not on these forums), most of my mix-making energy in the last few months went into making a box set of country music as a Christmas present for my father, previous owner of a handful of horrible compilations with titles such as "20 Golden Country and Western Hits". The box set was supposed to be something like that, only, you know, better. The whole thing ran up to 5 volumes, organised along the lines of five major lyrical themes in country music, but I will post them separately, spread out a little so as to avoid spamming, not least because only the individual volumes actually received titles. Also, the entries are a bit bare-bones - the project was a joint one with my brother (I was in charge of the musical, he of the artistic direction), who made absolutely amazing hand-crafted cardboard boxes for it, but we forgot to actually take pictures, so I have no proof of that. The booklets also included short essays, but they are written in German (though interspersed with quotes from the lyrics in English), so there wouldn't be much of a point in posting them here. They were also hastily written and not as engaging as I had hoped them to be - nice for adding a personal touch (and for directing the attention at the lyrics, which is something that my father doesn't usually pay much attention to), but maybe not quite worthy of publication.

Here, then, is just the tracklist of one of the volumes. The theme here is music - playing music, listening to music, wallowing in self-pity to music, failing to or succeeding in attracting potential partners by impressing them with your music, and so on and so forth.

Happy New Year, collectedsilences! This turned out to be a magnificent looking project.

I am a little curious whether there are German-language artists working this style of music.

Thanks, Mixxer, and a happy new year to you too!

There are, of course, a couple of German language indie bands that sometimes dabble a bit in slightly twangy fields, but I can't really think of any full-on country artists that really sing in German. Or do you just mean people coming from the German-speaking world, but singing in English? Because those do exist (in fact, there was a Eurovision entry from Germany just a few years ago that was actually a fairly decent country-pop tune), though I can't think of anyone who really does it particularly well. But your query just reminded me of a song I haven't heard in many years and would now love to hear again - "Mit dem Alter fängt man an, sich für Country zu interessieren" by a Swiss indie band called Die Aeronauten. The title simply states that one begins being interested in country music as one gets older, and it's a fun little song, as far as I remember.

Oh yeah, if you want to listen:

tracks 1-18 are here: http://drop.io/mtqqzdy
and the rest is here: http://drop.io/bvc5tto
Probably easier to use for streaming purposes than for downloading ones (you can download the tracks, but only individually as far as I can tell - I didn't bother with a zip file), but, here you are. If you click on a track, it will stream, and you can use the arrow keys left and right within the streaming window to navigate between tracks. For downloading a song, you need to click the small "download" links underneath the filename.

Wow, this looks fantastic. Absolutely my kind of country music. A really nice gift for your father.

Oh yeah! I am extremely excited about this. Can't wait to see the rest of them! It's already shaping up to be a masterpiece.

And let me just say, I absolutely hate it when people say they listen to "everything except country and rap", or some such permutation of that general gist. You get extra kudos for using that as your title.

I'll stop replying to my own mix after this one, I promise, but I just wanted to let you know that I figured out how to create a .zip archive out of the entire contents of those download links now. So if you follow these two links above, you should find a new button on the right side which says "download zip archive". I'm starting to believe that everyone should be using drop.io for all their mp3-uploading needs.
