Just a quick word on the site. Well, it's terrific of course, and I'm so glad to see so many familiar faces join up.

However, I personally cannot get my head round the layout of 'The Mixes' section. There appears to be no structure to it whatsoever, and if there is it's far too complex for a simpleton like me.

For instance, because it's not laid out in most recent mixes at the top I seem to be forever looking through them all again and again just to make sure I've not missed one.

Will The Sample mix forever be the first mix we see?
Why are some mixes blue and some grey?
What DOES sticky mean?

If this has been explained elsewhere already, I do apologise..

I'm not the most technical person in the world, and certainly not when it comes to computers and the internet, but as far as I can tell, mixes are blue when you haven't had a look at them at all yet or if there is a (or several) new comments you haven't read before. Also, sticky means it's forever at the top (important threads, so you'll never have to search for them). And mixes with the newest comment is the one at the top (besides the stickies, that is).

Did that make any sense or did I complicate things further?

I think I'm right, but if I'm not, please correct me.

Totally agree Sam mate. Maybe my ego is bruised from being at the bottom all week, or maybe it's a shit mix but a new thread for every individual mix seems the only soloution. Is that do-able Gabe? Or if there is any work around that makes more sense given than I'm as green as Sam & RP when it comes to the technical monsters.
The last thing I want to see is 'bump' I know a few egotists though not on here who would use that until the cows come home. Do ya feel me Gabe?

I love how it's taking off so far, some really decent folk are on board. Keep it up.

Thanks for bringing this up, Sam. It's a good question.

RebelPrincess pretty well nailed the explanation as far as that goes. If you're in the regular forum view, the topics are listed in reverse order by whatever topic has received the most recent comments. When the topic is blue, it means there are replies you haven't read; when they're gray, there's been nothing new posted since the last time you looked. And indeed, "sticky" topics are just topics that will remain pinned to the top of the forum, usually because they're important. But, for instance, I ought to unstick that sample mix, since by now everyone can see how to post a mix. :D

The interface isn't as linear as AotM was, I'll admit. It's a lot more dynamic in that the most recent stuff is given top billing. However, there are a few points that we should consider.

Like Barry, I'm not a fan of the 'bump' posts. However, I also know that we're all fans of our mixes and want people to see them! Alas, the functionality of the site comes down to how visitors interact with the site.

One thing I can't stress enough is that you can click on any member, and it takes you to a page called "(mixer name)'s Blog", which is a total misnomer because it isn't really a blog; it's actually one page that shows all their posts on the site. So by clicking on, say, Sammy's blog, I can go back and see all the mixes he's posted among all the comments he's made. It's a handy thing for looking back at people's older mixes.

Now that I have the ability to set up subforums within forum topics, I briefly considered setting up a separate subforum for each mixer. But I sort of rejected that pretty quickly; we've already got 39 members, and that list of subforums would quickly become unwieldy.

But if you want to keep your mixes in one place, I encourage anyone to start a single thread that you will regularly post to, and just post all of your mixes on that single topic. So then instead of having ten different threads for ten different mixes, you can have just the one overarching topic called "Billy Bob Thornton's Mixes" or whatever, with each mix showing up as a single post in that thread. The only limitation there is if someone winds up wanting to post a comment about a mix you made three mixes back; it'd just show up in-line on the thread.

Another handy thing that you may not have noticed. If you look up on the top of the sidebar, where it says Recent Posts? If you click on "See More", you get a page that shows every post on the forum in reverse chronological order. Handy?

Also, in the main forum view (when on http://mixtapes.lefora.com/forum/) you can see two blue buttons at the bottom of the white part of the page. Clicking the first shows all the topics in reverse chronology, regardless of what section the topic was started in (The Mixes, Music and Mixing Talk, etc.). The "Newest Posts" takes you to the same page as that "See More" I mentioned above.

There may be more things I can do, and ways to organize and make this more functional. I'm still digging around. Any suggestions are definitely appreciated!

Also, I have to look and see if I can up the number of topics that show up on one page. Right now it's at 20 topics per page, and I'd like to boost that up a bit if I can.

Here's a thought.

Would it help to organize things better if I set up subforums underneath the Mixtapes forum for the different styles of mixes, a la Theme, Mixed Genre, Blues, etc.?

Maybe I'm missing the answer in this string but can the Mixes not be arranged in chronological order? Can a date/time field be added or displayed? If not that seems like a MAJOR design flaw with Lefora.

I was wondering if it'd be possible to make the members choose for themselves in which order they want to show the threads, whether it be last reply, last post etc.

Well, I wish it was so easy.

But unfortunately that's out of my hands, RP. And considering it'd be an extra layer of coding that would have to be added into the back-end of Lefora's software and applied globally, I think it's out of the question for them to do something like that.

Still, the easiest way to see the posts in date order (and that includes all the posts, not individually within the sub-forums) is to click on the Newest Posts Across All Categories (or bookmark this link: http://mixtapes.lefora.com/forum/post/page1/ ).

But I think if people hang out here and click around, you'll get used to it. I mean, it took me months to work out the navigation to AotM!

PS: Any thoughts on breaking it down into categories for the Mixes section?

I wouldn't say it's a design flaw of Lefora. I've never been involved on a forum (which this technically still is) that let users sort by date. That is, alas, one of the side-effects of being a dynamic rather than static interface.

Each post, though, includes a date and time down at the bottom, beneath the user's signature.
