Really simple to begin.

The first mix-off challenge is to create a mix that represents the first hour of a New Years Eve party. What would you play to get the party going? Would you go upbeat? Chilled? Attention-getting or unobtrusive?

Remember the rules.

1) Mixes must be as close to 60min as possible without going over.
2) Mixes must be posted in this thread.
3) Mixes should be posted by December 28 so members have time to listen to them all before the end of the month.
4) Users can vote for their favorite in this thread. Please use the thumbs up/thumbs down rating to indicate your like or dislike.
5) The mixer with the most thumbs up as of January 1 will win some fantastic swag provided by yours truly (who is therefore barred from participating).

Have fun! I can't wait to see what you guys and gals come up with!

Just brilliant. I'd be bloomin' delirious by track 5. What a great opening quintet! Also love the En Vogue and Eve choices.

A great opening to '09 Sara :)

I'm with SammyG, great opening quintet. I'm a sucker for that Stealers Wheel track. Love the closing Nirana through Radiohead run too. Can't wait for the 2nd hour's music :-)

Here's a slightly different take on the New Year's Eve mix - bearing in mind that the big New Year's Eve tradition ( BESIDES how much can you drink) is that midnight kiss with the one you're going to be with for the coming year - very romantic, let's not forget!
So this mix, though tracks 4 through 19 should be party-danceable enough, are really aimed at your date, whom you HOPE is tuned in enough to pick up all your musical messages - or, if not, will at least get the general gist of it & be with you at midnight & beyond:

1) Ella Fitzgerald - What Are You Doing New Year's?
2) Jack Teagarden - If I Could Be with You (One Hour Tonight)
3) Mildred Bailey - Long About Midnight
4) J J Cale - After Midnight
5) Wilson Pickett - In the Midnight Hour
6) Honeydrippers - Good Rockin' at Midnight
7) Lowell Fulson - Rocking After Midnight
8) Laura Lee Perkins - Come on Baby (Kiss Me)
9) Sam Butera + the Witnesses - Dig That Crazy Chick
10) Arthur Alexander - The Girl That Radiates That Charm
11) Shangrilas - Give Him a Great Big Kiss
12) Etta James - Something's Got a Hold on Me
13) Charles Sheffield - It's Your Voodoo Working
14) Four Pennies - You're a Gas with Your Trash
15) Harold Burrage - She Knocks Me Out
16) Speedo & the Pearls - Who Ya Gonna Kiss?
17) Lamplighters - Smoochy
18) Marie Jenkins - Jump With Me baby
19) Cars - Just What I Needed
20) Otis redding & Carla thomas - New Year's Resolution

Ohhh love the idea, and the 3 entries thus far. I wish I could compete but that would require focus. Ho hum.
Hey Gabe, can you give the big thumb to more than one?

Well, yes. I'm going on the guess that a winner will come out in the end, because I don't forsee any cheaters here. Heh heh!

And I have a feeling that in a month you can crank something out, Barry, and be damned with your focus-pocus baloney!

I like them all so far from 3 of my favorite mixers. What's not to like? It's party time. Unfortunately this year we're going to party like it's 1929.

I do think the monthly mix-off is a terrific concept. I'll be anxious to check the posts before the ball drops in T-Square.

Early '80s New Year's Eve Pop

The following is a sampling of music that was popular on New Year's Eve from late 1979 to early 1984.
I had done a mix three years ago that chose 1 song per New Year's from '54-55 to '79-80 and put them
in chronological order.  This one picked at least two from each year and put them in order by what
sounded best to my ear.  The length of the mix is 58m58s.

     1. 80-81 Kool & The Gang - Celebration (1981 #1)
     2. 83-84 Madonna - Holiday (1984 #16)
     3. 80-81 Diana Ross - I'm Coming Out (extended) (1980 #5)
     4. 80-81 Delbert McClinton - Giving it Up for Your Love (1981 #8)
     5. 80-81 Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (Jammin') (1980 #5)
     6. 83-84 Re-Flex - The Politics of Dancing (1984 #24)
     7. 79-80 M - Pop Muzik (1979 #1)
     8. 81-82 Go-Go's - Our Lips Are Sealed (1981 #20)
     9. 82-83 Toni Basil- Mickey (1982 #1)
    10. 81-82 The Cars - Shake It Up (1982 #4)
    11. 82-83 Stray Cats - Rock This Town (1982 #9)
    12. 80-81 Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot (1980 #9)
    13. 83-84 The Romantics - Talking in Your Sleep (1984 #3)
    14. 79-80 Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain (1980 #21)
    15. 82-83 Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing (1983 #3)

All mixes look really good. Sammy, can I come to your party? That playlist is amazing. Joe's looks like what I first thought I'd go for. Nice.

Great stuff, Retro, with one exception. Am I the only one who absolutely LOATHES "Celebration"? Saccharine and played into the ground. No diss on you, tho. Love the rest of it.

I miss the 80s.

Terrific mix, Joe. The best part is the great songs you chose to start and end the mix.

hmmm, guess I could have chosen "Joanna" by Kool & The Gang (which was a #2 hit for them at New Years of 1983-84) and thrown that into the mix instead of their "Celebration".  Good to know the rest works for you though. :)

For anybody who is interested, I've since updated this mix, removing what was
tracks 1 & 9, and inserting Starting Over by John Lennon and Under Pressure
by Queen between the last two songs.  Thanks for the feedback!
