That cinematic approach

So, now that the forum is sort of up and running, I've knuckled down to work on my own inaugural mix, and once again I've noticed that whenever I'm making a mix, I tend to craft it in a very cinematic style. And that got me thinking...

...am I the only one who thinks crafting soundtracks for movies would be the absolute best job ever?

Dude, that or being a "personal music stylist"!

No, I totally agree. If not crafting the actual soundtrack album, at least selecting songs for use in scenes during the movie. Being horribly critical of song selections in movies, it would be great to be the one making the selections. That goes along with my other dream job where I would simply sit in a room and screen every newly-completed television commercial. I would then give those involved with each ad step-by-step instructions on how to make it infinitely less inane.

I've done that as a profession, and the bad news is, no matter how clear the instructions you give, and no matter how straightforward you are about it, the client never takes that advice. On the contrary, they often go the exact opposite direction, usually using the words "Can you use more colors for the words!" and "Can you make them swoosh around the screen and then flash?" in their replies.

It would be a fantastic job. How amazing would it be to be, for example, Trent Reznor when he was putting together the soundtrack for "Natural Born Killers". As for writing music for commercials, I'd rather eat broken glass...

I always imagine movies scenes when I listen to music, so it's natural for me to think of my mixes as soundtracks. Not all, mind you, but most of them.
