The concept of Gutbucket predates the actual births of the original Gutbucket Brothers of course, but the following story taken from The Last Waltz was what originally gave Brother Doowad the inspiration for the Gutbucket genre:
In 1965, Levon & The Hawks were jamming with Sonny Boy Williamson. As recounted in the Last Waltz film, Sonny Boy would finish a harp riff and lean over and spit into a bucket. The boys in the Hawks figured it was just saliva build-up, but later they looked in the bucket and saw it full of puss, blood and phlegm. They had tried to set up what at the time would be called a "salt and pepper" tour (Blacks and Whites mixed in the band), but Sonny Boy died before the details could be ironed up.
When Brother Funky sent Brother Doowad a mix with the New York Dolls' cover of Sonny Boy's Don't Start Me To Talkin', the Gutbucket Brothers were born.
